This scale exercise does several things:
1. It demonstrates several different ways to look at and play the G major scale on the banjo neck.
2. It has several different ascending & descending patterns which can be used on 'any' major or minor scale, but is being demonstrated with the G major scale.
3. A 'classical'-sounding scale pattern that works in tunes like 'Devils Dream' and for generic, scale-based improvization.
4. A "Roll-Style" approach to playing a scale-based melody in a 'double-thumb', 'square'-type roll pattern. It ascends and descends from the 3rd string, then does the same thing beginning on the 4th string.
5. The Grand Finale is a melodic style rendition of "Sailor's Hornpipe", wich demostrates extensive use of triplets to dress-up or 'fancy-up' a scale-based, melodic style fiddle tune for the banjo.
